The Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) plans to lobby for East London to become the German national team’s base for Soccer World Cup 2010. Zintle Peter (executive mayor), Matthew Moonieya (director of the mayor’s office), and Martin Kuchler (Tourism Buffalo City acting manager) believe that the decision will be influenced by the fact that East London is the home of one of the biggest DaimlerChrysler plants outside of it’s headquarters in Stuttgart.
"Mercedes Benz is the German national team’s sponsor and we are looking to use our strong ties with the car manufacturer and bring the team to East London,” Kuchler noted.
To be Fifa compliant to accommodate one of the teams during the Soccer World Cup 2010, East London needs a 12,000-seater stadium. The city is considering re-engineering existing facilities such as the Absa, Amalinda, Mdantsane and Bhisho stadiums to meet Fifa requirements.
