On the 6th December 2006, Fifa announced the number qualifying spots allocated for each continent for 2010. Compared to 2006, Africa had an additional slot and Europe lost a slot.
Africa |
6 |
Including South Africa who automatically qualify. |
Asia |
4.5 |
Asia's 5th-best team will play against Oceania champion |
Europe |
13 |
One less than the 14 who played in 2006. |
North America |
3.5 |
4th-placed North American team plays 5th-placed South American team |
Oceania |
0.5 |
Oceania champion will play against Asia's fifth-best team |
South America |
4.5 |
5th-placed South American team plays 4th-placed North American team |
Only South Africa, as the host nation, automatically qualified (the defending champion, Italy, no longer automatically qualified). When it comes to the World Cup and predicting who may win, one needs to ignore the form guide and pay attention to history. Spain and Germany may be the rage when it comes to online betting, but no European side has ever won the World Cup away from Europe. History suggests another South American triumph. It also points to an African side making the semi-finals for the first time.
