Uruguay scraped past Costa Rica in a playoff to get into the 2010 World Cup. Uruguay is part of group A, and will play South Africa, Mexico and France in the opening round.

Uruguay will be based in Kimberley during the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, and will use the GWK Park Stadium (home ground of the Griquas rugby club) as their training ground.
The Uruguayan national team will stay at the Protea Hotel Kimberley, located in the outskirts of the city. The plan is for the squad to arrive and settle in at the Protea hotel a week before their first World Cup match, and then to travel the day prior to each match and return after the match to their headquarters in Kimberley.
