Portugal beat the Netherlands 1-0 (in a match in which 2 men a-side were given red cards) to advance to the quarterfinals, where they beat England (who had been playing with 10 men for much of the game, after Rooney was red-carded) in a penalty shoot-out, after playing time had resulted in no goals scored. Portugal were defeated by France in the semi-final, and then lost 0-3 against Germany in the third place playoff. |
