At the 2006 Soccer World Cup FIFA introduced a betting ban for players. All players representing the thirty-two participating nations had to sign a statement agreeing that no family members would bet on the World Cup games. This was after a 26-year old referee, Robert Hoyzer, was found guilty of match-fixing, and received a prison sentence of 2 years and 5 months.
