At the 2006 Soccer World Cup FIFA introduced a betting ban for players. All players representing the thirty-two participating nations had to sign a statement agreeing that no family members would bet on the World Cup games. This was after a 26-year old referee, Robert Hoyzer, was found guilty of match-fixing, and received a prison sentence of 2 years and 5 months. We anticipate that no officials will be placing a football bet at the 2010 tournament. The 2010 World Cup is a huge event that attracts the interest of people from all over the world. World Cup betting is becoming increasingly popular and just about every bookmaker on the planet will be offering World Cup Odds on just about every possible outcome from who will win the tournament, golden boot winner as well as odds on every match from the group stages to the final. We are looking forward to a great tournament.
Initial odds indicate Brazil and Spain as the joint favourites to win the World Cup - pretty tight odds given that there are so many countries involved. I like Italy at 12/1. The host nation, South Africa, is available at 125/1 and if New Zealand's odds of winning are set at a stellar 1000/1.
